Fall 2011 Season Preview

Because good booze is always relevant.

As promised, here’s my initial commentary on things to come next season. All in all it appears to have a whole bunch of decent titles and names, as if to make up for the current weak summer season. Though by all rights, in the club of summer seasons the current one isn’t particularly bad – last year was a whole lot worse, for instance. But never mind the summer, here’s comes the Fall.

High tier

Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai – Laugh away, but recently I’ve come across so many H-doujins and artwork of this thing that I just have to find out what the hell all this fuss is about.
Fate/Zero – Though Nasutards will no doubt shit, piss and puke on this, I don’t think I even need to state a reason for watching this.
Guilty Crown – Yes, it sounds like a dumbed down version of Code Geass (though after CG season 2 I doubt that’s even possible) but it does have some interesting names on the roster. I have to say though, a superpowered everyman teenager joins a bunch of rebels to fight against the Man. Don’t they ever get tired of this stuff? Also scheduled on noitaminA, oh lawd. High tier because if anything, it might fail hilariously. Character designs by redjuice, but that means absolutely jack shit in this enterprise.
Last Exile: Ginyoku no Fam – Zombie-GONZO is back, and attempting to regain its former glory with another installment of Last Exile anime. I have my doubts about GONZO, but I’m glad to see a new addition to the LE’s fascinating steampunk universe. Same director as in the first series, but mostly different people doing the script and composition. We’ll see how it goes, but I always appreciate ambition that is so short in supply nowadays.
Mirai Nikki – Do I even need to explain?
Shakugan no Shana III – I just want to see this fucking thing end.
Shinryaku!? Ika Musume – Foolish human, wasting your time reading this while your world is being invaded!
Tamayura ~hitotose~ – Seems like a relaxed show for after-work chilling. Can always use one of those.
UN-GO – Based on the works of a famous Japanese novelist, and the staff seems somewhat credited. Sounds interesting.
Working’!! – A-1′s surprisingly successful restaurant comedy returns. With the pre-airing episode already around for viewing, I can quite comfortably say that it’s quite the same as the first season – a comedy with all bets on its awesome character cast. Working! already showed how a few well thought male characters and a little bit of drama can make a big comedic difference opposed to a set of standard cutesy no-brainer female.

Mid tier

C3 – lol there’s a naked girl in my kitchen. I hope she fate/stays there too. (keksi oli oma vitsimä X–DD)
Chihayafuru – Based on a josei manga, appears to be about a competitive card game called karuta. Somehow the josei genre has a bizarre tendency to introduce disturbing plot elements out of fucking nowhere (‘sup Usagi Drop), and I can only wonder what it is this time. Will give the show a consideration.
Hunter x Hunter – Remake of the only shounen show I have shown even a tiny bit of interest ever since my personal Naruto-period. Might give it a few eps.
Kimi to Boku. – Would look like A Channel with a male cast, lol wat. But I guess it’s a change.
Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon – Light novel adaptation marketing with seiyuu names and lots of tits. Trailer is the textbook stuff with a dime in a dozen soundtrack and silly CG. Guess I’ll watch for the stupidity and forced otaku fap fodder, because I ain’t gay or no shit.
Mobile Suit Gundam AGE – A teenager gets a superpowered mecha and uses it to fight bad guys and adults who just don’t get it. There was a time when I loved to make fun of this shit, but given that I’m now at least twelve years older than the target audience it’s not even funny anymore.
Phi Brain: Kami no Puzzle – Sunrise, colorful machines, superpowered teens. Herp-a-derp-derp.

Shit tier

Battle Spirits: Heroes – Bandai once again has Sunrise to promote a card game. Yawn.
Busou Shinki Moon Angel – Sounds like Infinite Stratos all over again. Not that it matters, since it’s another 5-minute run show. What’s with this format recently? Anime for the twitter generation that requires everything to be compressed into semi-comprehensible bullets? I only find these extremely tedious to follow.
Cross Fight B-Daman – The fact that these toy/game commercial series have been raising their ugly collective head again truly demonstrates the desperate financial situation in the industry. That said, don’t feel obliged to consume this crap.
Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai! – Eroge adaptation for those with a samurai girl fetish. This includes myself, but still.
Maken-Ki! – ZZZZZZZZZZZ
Mashiro-iro Symphony – Eroge adaptation.
Persona 4 The Animation – Somehow I’ve never felt any fascination towards the Persona franchise despite some attempts to get into it. I’ll leave this to the fans unless I hear some stellar things about it.
Sekai-ichi Hatsukoi – As if it wasn’t gay enough already, DEEN is doing the production.

And there we go! A lot of highlights are coming up, so I have quite high expectations of this season. All in all this has been a pretty good year of anime, and even the crappy summer was covered by the awesome trio of Kaiji, Steins;Gate and Nichijou. These ending along with the current season will be leaving a vacuum, and it is up to the above mentioned to make up for that. Don’t let me down now.

  1. The series that I’m probably watching to the end can be found on your High tier list. Working!! and Ika Musume will both be a enjoyable watch if the creators keep the shows on the right track.

Guilty Crown has been confirmed for 22 episodes which means that there is a possibility to build the story more freely. I find that most 12 episode stories feel a bit rushed. For example it would be very hard for me to imagine Steins;Gate working as a 12 episoder.

I’m going to give those despicable eroge adaptations a try. I have watched every episode of Mayo Chiki! thus far and even though it has been very painful at times I’ve persevered.

Let us hope that you aren’t right about Chihayafuru. I guess the anime version of Usagi Drop won’t be as tasteless as the manga.

  2. I can tell you why Boku wa Tomodachi will be popular as hell: Main character is antisocial jerk who for some reason attracts women all over the place. Just like in AnoHana, and Japanese otaku totally eat that shit up. Oh, and there are two hot girls who wet their panties every time they see the MC. It’s the Otaku Dream given form. And of course the main female cast are all totally otaku and shit. One of them plays erogames and one of them is yandere (or I’m pretty sure she is, I just glanced at the wikipedia article).

I’m telling you, it’s everything otaku could possibly want and that’s why it’ll be popular as hell. Btw, wanna bet that the blonde one is only half Japanese and half foreigner? If she’s 100% Japanese then that’s a reason why I’ll watch this show just for shits and giggles.

And why isn’t the new Lupin III series on your list? It’ll very likely be all cool and shit.

Word of advice: Drop Last Exile from your list before you even begin with it. It is Gonzo work, and it’ll be totally shitty and crappy. Search for your feelings! You know it to be true.

  3. HxH is scheduled for sunday morning kids’ TV. Come on, don’t you dare to check the anime out, there’s no way in hell they’d actually show all the splatter and gore of the manga.

    @Puuhakka:
“Oh, and there are two hot girls who wet their panties every time they see the MC.”
    I call bullshit.
Quite the contrary, mocking him is their greatest pleasure and they take part in that a lot.

  4. I miss Sagara Sousuke. Yes, his age is still ridiculously young, but at least he’s fighting as a trained veteran instead of everyman-turned hero. This “Chosen One” stunt is getting old (and the male lead sounds like a wuss).

I’m going to give Guilty Crown a chance anyway since action looks decent, but if the fighters start employing Hollywood Tactics a la the two last episodes of CG (unguided nukes anyone?)…bye bye.

The only anime I have good expectations is Fate/Zero. I’ll probably watch the rest of your high-tier list if reviews turns out interesting (‘cept for Shana, because no way I’m going through that again)

  5. The company that did Fate/Zero also did Sonic X, which makes me uneasy when you consider that the light novel prequel was already a way to milk the cow more. Boku wa Tomodachi struck me as an inferior Haruhi premise; I only read the first chapter, but the characters just struck me as pathetic, and in particular the girl who was an annoying dork. When I watch Shana, this time I’m going to fast-forward through the love triangle parts using the double speed feature of VLC player. The episodes will only last 10 minutes.

  6. The ones I’m most excited about are C3 (it looks cool, actually), Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai (yeah, I’ve heard alot about the manga, but since AIC is doing the anime, it’s probably gonna come out like R-15 lol) and, of course, Shana.

Hunter X Hunter and Mirai Nikki are also on the must watch of this season.

I still think last year’s Fall was way better, but oh well, after coming with shitty Winter, not so bad Spring and drowzy Summer, it’s not so bad.

  8. Shakugan no Shana Shakugan no Shana Shakugan no Shana Shakugan no Shana Shakugan no Shana Shakugan no Shana Shakugan no Shana Shakugan no Shana Shakugan no Shana Shakugan no Shana Shakugan no Shana Shakugan no Shana Shakugan no Shana Shakugan no Shana Shakugan no Shana Shakugan no Shana Shakugan no Shana Shakugan no Shana Shakugan no Shana Shakugan no Shana Shakugan no Shana Shakugan no Shana Shakugan no Shana Shakugan no Shana

So that’s what my most anticipated show is……..

Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai is probably my number two….the manga was pretty funny (what I’ve read of it), so I expect the anime to be awesome as well.

  9. >Working’!!
    >awesome character cast
    >well thought male characters

I guess there must be two shows called Working because the one I saw, and dropped after the first terrible episode, was the shittiest paint-by-the-numbers harem comedy since the last one and every character in it was entirely defined by their annoying personality quirks.
