First Look at Winter ’11/’12

I won’t let me post without an image, so here’s a miko.

The end of the Fall season is drawing close, so I thought I might as well take a look at what’s up next. Chartfag-clone of the day here. I’m returning to NEET life this week, so I should be at least be able to cover some more series than usual. But let’s cut the crap, here’s my commentary.

High interest

Ano Natsu de Matteru – Everything I know about foreveralone.jpg I learned from Onegai Teacher/Twins ;_;
Another – Not much into horror series, but the setting seems pretty interesting and the director has a reasonably clean record. Could go well on the side of Nisemonogatari.
High School DxD – Perverted protag getting killed on his first date sounds like an interesting start, but this sure reeks like another ten-penny LN adaptation. But it has Hikasa Youko voicing a badass chick, and I could always use having one shitty harem show around. The scriptwriter was also responsible of Ikki Tousen, so…
Daily Lives of High School Boys – Probably the most straightforward title in the season. Sunrise doing something else than shitty mecha/super power shows? Also, School Rumble’s director. Could work.
Kill Me Baby – This is just to double my chances of getting a good JC Staff comedy in the season. The setting sounds pretty good for comedy, but it isn’t the first time JC Staff screws up something that was supposed to be idiot proof.
Kyousogiga – A bunch of good seiyuu names and an interesting setting of human and youkai worlds colliding. The production crew seems to have mostly magical girl series under their belt though, so remains to be seen how this actually turns out.
Nisemonogatari – Next.
Tantei Opera Milky Holmes 2 – The first season was awesome lulz, but the OVAs were rather weak. Don’t you fucking screw this up, JC Staff.

Amagami SS+ – Was there really a need for more of this? Apparently there’s a new director at the helm, so might give it a try. At least it might have more delicious Haruka.
Black Rock Shooter – So it returns after the piss weak OVA. This better be stellar but knowing the franchise, probably not.
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed HD Remaster – Never seen the original series, and it doesn’t sound very interesting either. Will give it a few episodes just because I haven’t watched mecha stuff in a while.
Mouretsu Pirates – A school girl is forced to become a space pirate captain. From Satelight whom I remember for mostly shit like MM!. Also reeks of LN-adaptation trash, complete with a proudly announced seiyuu roster the size of Botswana. It better be hilarious.
Papa no Iu Koto wo Kikinasai! – I know, I know, LN trash at its worst. A guy has to house three girls in his apartment, hilarity is supposed to ensue. But…Kitamura Eri, man. Kitamura Eri.
Recorder to Randoseru – Adapted from a 4koma about a kid who looks like a big guy, and his older sister who looks like a kid. It could work, but I have my doubts regarding 4koma adaptations. Nothing worth mentioning about the production staff either.
Rinne no Lagrange – XEBEC doesn’t bring up too many good memories, and Production IG has also tarnished itself with Guilty Crown recently. But something tells me to give it a try. From the same director as Mouretsu Pirates.

Area no Kishi – Sports.
Aquarion EVOL – Robots.
BRAVE10 – Swords.
Busou Chuugakusei Basketarmy – Military theme with a director named Romanov, what could go wrong? Oh wait, 3-minute episodes? Nope.
Gokujou – PMS, teenager PMS everywhere.
Inu x Boku SS – Looks like LN trash if I’ve ever seen one. If Mouretsu Pirates sucks, I might give it a chance.
Natsume Yuujin-chou Shi – Haven’t seen any of the previous seasons.
New Prince of Tennis – Sports. Yawn.
Senhime Zesshou Symphogear – Would seem like an attempt to cash in on the Vocaloid fandom. Magical mecha girls and lots of insert songs, I’d imagine.
Zero no Tsukaima F – Oh sweet Jesus no.

>my face when the only noitaminA-show in the season is Black Rock Shooter

    This already aired.

Hm…looks like it flew completely under my radar. Strangely enough nobody seems to have been talking about it either. Oh well, about time to check it out then.

I’m definately gonna watch Gundam Seed Remake next season. I really liked the original one and thought it was actually pretty good retelling of the original Mobile Suit Gundam (which is awesome as hell).

Mouretsu Pirates could be fun. The promo pic reminds me little of Captain Harlock, and if they decide it to be more serious than your average otaku show, I think it has some potential. Hell, it’s been a while since we got a nice, serious scifi action series.

I’ve heard some good things about Brave10. We can only hope it’s as ridiculously awesome as Sengoku Basara and and has some awesome balls to the walls -action.

The ones I’m looking forward the most are High School DxD, Kill Me Baby! and Zero no Tsukaima F (let’s get this over with, for god’s sake). I wonder what Kugimiya Rie will live from, now that both Zero no Tsukaima and Shana are coming to an end.

Mouretsu Pirates, Ano Natsu and Inu x Boku SS sound cool too.

HD remaster of Seed? Count me in for that. Loved that series, but destiny should have never happened.

I’m sure JC Staff will keep hiring Kugimiya in their new shows. She has pretty much canonized herself as tsundere-loli character, and I seriously doubt that archetype won’t run out of favor anytime soon.

Next season is looking much better than the current imo. This season had almost nothing worth watching (aside from one pretty good show and one meh’ish), but next season will at least have some robots! We haven’t had any proper super robot show since Mazinkaiser SKL, and that was only three episodes. And Brave10 seems pretty awesome if the manga is of any indication.

Well, this is the first Winter post I’ve read, and I can’t believe the term ‘Symphogear’ is part of a title, woww. This is a good outlook. I think my staples are easy with Daily Lives of High School Boys, Nisemonogatari, and Yuujinchou. Probably will fit in a wildcard; either Lagrange, Pirates, or Milky Holmes if I manage to finish the first season. Should be nice though, I haven’t been asking for much of seasonal offerings.

I can’t wait for more Kyousogiga, and hopefully in better quality. Very rad animation, which I caught wind of from Ben over at Anipages.

Didn’t noitaminA also air Thermae Romae? If you haven’t seen that, I think it’s an interesting show. It’s finished though, now.

Also, Basket Army’s only five minutes long. It’s not a disadvantage; it’s an advantage! It’s like taking the superiority of short OVA series over long TV series to the max by making the OVA five minutes long, and airing every other month! Granted, two of those minutes are probably going to be flashbacks to the last episode because of the time period between each episode but WHO CARES

I don’t watch anything that runs shorter than 12 minutes. Too easily forgettable to do it on a weekly basis. Personally I don’t even bother listing them as potential series, so you won’t find them here.
